Six Hairstyles, One Blowout

Here's a great way to make your blowout last a few days.  I tried to make this easy for you, I curled Chelsea's hair and did these six styles.  I didn't use a brush or a comb.  Here's how I did it.
First, section your hair from temple to temple.
Taking vertical sections, wrap the hair away from the face and down the barrel of the curling iron.  Do not use the clamper on iron, just hold with fingers like I showed you here.  Continue this all around the head, then take down the top section and do the same.
Here's what it looks like before I break it apart with my fingers (No brush!).  Cute, huh?
Sorry, Chelsea's a little shy so I try not to take her picture from the front.

For the pictures above here's what you do:
1. Soft and Down
I just loosened up the curls with my fingers.

2. Sexy Bob
I wanted to make it look like a cute, sexy, bob so I took the back section and pinned it up and under.  Let the sides fall out.

3. Side Ponytail
Take the hair and secure it in a side ponytail then wrap a piece of hair around the rubber band to hide it.  Let some wispy pieces fall out in the front.

4. French Braid
Do a french braid along the front hairline and pin it underneath the crown of hair.

5. French Twist
Grab the hair in a low ponytail and twist it going up.  Tuck the end under and put a few pins in to secure it.  Leave it messy!

6. Half Up
Section out the crown and clip up.  Then get a small section from each side and put them in a rubber band or pin them at the back of the head.  Then let the crown down to fall over the pinned hair.  Leave some wispy pieces around your face.

Leave me a comment and let me know how you did or if you need any help?

Let Me Blow Ya Mind

I understand... some of us are born with nice, easy hair and some aren't so lucky.      For those of you who aren't born with the hair they want there are lots of ways to make it look great without much effort.

A good hairstyle starts with a great haircut.  Color also helps give your hair body if you have fine hair and if you want it to look thicker and fuller.  If your hair is frizzy or a little too curly there are many different keratin/brazilian blowouts that make the hair so soft, shiny and frizz free.  (Even though many brazilian blowout products work so much better with formaldehyde in them, I will never use them.  Why breathe fumes that are bad for you?)
The shampoo, conditioner and hairstyling products you use also make a HUGE difference on how your hair looks.

I get lots of friends asking me how do I style my hair.  I always tell them how easy it is.  They usually think that because I'm a hairdresser I spend all this time styling my hair and that it is too hard for them to do it on themselves.  The truth is I really don't like to spend time styling my own hair.  I like my hair messy and low maintenance!
Here's how the magic happens!

My hair was really straight until I had my kids.  Now it has a slight wave in it, the more product I use the wavier and bigger my hair gets.  By the third day of not washing my hair, it is straight and flat.
First thing is, I never comb my hair out.  It keeps my waves clumped together.  People with curly hair should only comb their hair when they have conditioner in it.  After they rinse it out there should be no more combing, if you have to get tangles out then use your fingers.  This will keep your curls clumped together and make chunkier curls instead of frizzy, skinny curls.

First, I comb just my bangs straight down, and then spray on a lot of Davines No.14 Sea Salt Primer.

Photo bomb by my son Alex!
Yes, I took all these pictures of myself with my iPhone.
Next I use a creamy pomade.  Right now I'm using American Crew Forming Cream but I use lots of different pomades.  Usually whatever my hubby is using.  Put a little on your hands and rub together.

Now, DO NOT put your hands on the top of your head, you will end up with a grease pit on top of your head!  Always apply oil-based products from the bottom of your hair up.  Just grab clumps of hair all over your head.

Next, I blow out my bangs with a big round brush.  Even though I have those side swept bangs I always blow-dry my bangs straight down.  That prevents any crazy bumps or cowlicks.  Oh, for you youngsters, that thing next to my round brush is a diffuser.  If you had a perm in the 80's like I did then you remember the diffusers.  You need to get one; they can make straight hair into nice wavy hair.

The diffuser is like a cup with fingers, just scoop up your hair in it while it dries.  Keep it moving so you don't burn your hair!

Here's what it looks like before I swoop my bangs over with my hands. (Remember, no brush!)

Ta-Da! Here is my finished look.  Pretty easy, right?

Any questions just leave a comment and I'll answer it.

Joshua Tree

Don't you feel like time is rushing by?  I sure do, I feel like my kids are growing up so fast.   I can't believe my son will be going to college in 3 years!   I feel like I really need to share a lot of experiences with him before he gets out of high school.  That's why I am making every vacation count.  Even if it's somewhere we've been a million times.  I want to see as much as we can on every trip.

We always go to Palm Springs, I love the heat and I LOVE laying by a pool!   On our last visit we went on the Palm Springs Tram, which the kids had never done before.  On the way home from our Palm Springs trip we made a slight detour (hour and half detour, but so worth it) and stopped at Joshua Tree National Park.  The kids and I had never been to Joshua Tree.  My husband has visited a few times and he loves it.  He wanted to take us to Jumbo Rocks which is where Skull Rock is located.  We typed Jumbo Rocks onto our GPS on our iPhones and the map took us right to it.  (I love technology!)

Joshua Tree is gorgeous, beautiful and amazing!  You have to see it.
No wonder U2 wrote such an amazing album with the same name.

See ya later!

Let's go over here.

No, over here.

Come down here, mom.

Beautiful

Seriously, I have to squeeze down there with my camera?

Run the World, Girls!

Ok, I know it's June already.  I did promise myself that I would get back to my exercise routine before summer and swimsuit season started!  Well, I decided today that I would do something, anything, no matter what.

So I put on my running shoes and clicked on my favorite running app, Nike+GPS, and off I went!  Now first let me tell you why I love the Nike+ app.  The app tells me how far, how fast and where I run.  It also tells me how many calories I burned, which I know is not accurate, but I still like to see it.  Then it stores all this info on my iPhone and on the Nike+ website so I can see my progress.  For those of you who need a little motivation, you can send your run info to your Facebook page and your friends can cheer you on.

I also like that I can listen to all the songs on my iPhone or one of the playlist I make.  Oh, and if I'm feeling sluggish I can press the "power song" button and the power song I picked will play.  Right now it's Beyonce's "Run the World (Girls)" I feel like I can kick some serious butt when that song comes on!

Here's my running playlist, I hope it inspires you to get out there and run, walk or just get moving!  What motivates you to work out?

1. Another One Bites the Dust - Queen
2. Everybody Got Their Something - Nikka Costa
3. Empire State of Mind (feat. Alicia Keys) - Jay Z
4. Run the World (Girls) - Beyonce
5. Shake Me Down - Cage The Elephant
6. Bodysnatchers - Radiohead
7. Ready to Start - Arcade Fire
8. As the Rush Comes - Motorcycle
9. Stop Me - Mark Ronson feat. Daniel Merriweather
10. Unfinished Sympathy (Perfecto Mix by Paul Oakenfold) - Massive Attack
11. Hearing Damage - Thom Yorke
12. Wham Rap (Enjoy What You Do) - Wham
13. I Can't Go For That (No Can Do) - Daryl Hall & John Oates

L.E.S. Artistes

I LOVE all kinds of art.  I have collected a few pieces over the years but I want more and more. Unfortunately, the pieces I like are usually too expensive for this soccer mom.  So, since I cannot draw, paint or even color between the lines I leave it up to my kids to create most of the art for our house.  They actually do a really great job and my friends are surprised when I tell them that the kids made it.

I saw a really cool piece of art I wanted in a magazine. I thought my daughter (she's eleven) could easily copy it and she did. Here's all you need:

Large canvas (my canvas is 30"x40")
Colored electrical tape ( my tape is 2" wide)

Now just put the tape on the canvas wherever you want it.
I had her do red, white and blue for the piece in my dining room.

yes, I have a large vinyl collection, but not as big as my dad's!

She did this neon one for her room.
(yes, her room is painted black!)

Piece of cake, right?

Beauty Routine

Beauty Routine

Aging, ugh, I hate what it's doing to my face.  Ever since I've hit my mid forties I have noticed a lot of changes to my face.  My skin is very dry in certain areas and greasy in others.  It seems like whatever moisturizer I use, my chin looks dry and flaky.  I decided to go buy a new moisturizer and foundation to try and solve this problem.

I definitely don't buy cheap when it comes to my face.  I think it all started when I was fourteen and my mom took me to buy makeup for the first time.  We went to a department store and she bought me a Clinique moisturizer and a few other things.  My mom told me to put moisturizer on my face everyday and I did.

I went to Sephora the other day and told the sales girl about my problem areas. I told her I only wear foundation on my nose, chin and around my mouth, and I needed some coverage (I have some rosacea).  She starts trying different moisturizers, primers, oils, foundations, the works!  Nothing was working, she would put the foundation on my chin and all this dry, flaky skin would appear.
I read about the Clinique Moisture Surge Intense Moisturizer in a magazine and wanted to try it.  Now, the last time I used any Clinique products I was in my twenties.  I thought it was only for young skin.  I loved the Moisture Surge's creamy, gel like consistency and it felt great on my skin.
Next, she decided to try a tinted moisturizer instead of regular foundation or concealer.  She tried Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturize SPF 20 Oil Free and it worked great.  I didn't get the dry flaky skin anywhere and it had great coverage.
On those rare nights when my husband and I get a date night I will go for more coverage and use Giorgio Armani's Lasting Silk Foundation, it is a bit pricey but it will last me at least a year.

Those days when I have a pimple or extra redness I will use Benefit Boi-ing Concealer to cover it up.  It also has a nice creamy consistency and does not make my chin flaky.

Now those of us of a certain age should try to keep our skin looking young and dewy but not oily.  I love Giorgio Armani's Loose Powder for my oily forehead and nose.

I also have been using Nars Blush, in Orgasm or Deep Throat (yes, that's their names) since it first came out, which was years ago.  I love that it has a slight shimmer to give me that dewy look with no sparkles in it so I don't look like a teenager.

I think eyebrows are often overlooked but can make a huge difference on the way we look.  Some girls need to lighten their eyebrows (ask your hairdresser) while some of us should darken them.  Girls should have their eyebrows shaped, it can be an instant eye lift for some of us.  Since I have almost no eyebrows I use an angled brush and a soft brown eye shadow to color them in.

Would you be impressed if I told you I could do all of the above in less than 10 minutes?  Seriously, ask my husband.

Hmm... I thought I was low maintenance... Guess not!

Creating that Beachy, Wavy Hairstyle with a Curling Iron.

Here it is.... my first hair tutorial.  I'll try to make my tutorials shorter next time and maybe I should put on some make-up.  Let me know if you have any questions or need more help.
