7 Things You Should Splurge On For Your Home

I found this great article on Houzz about the seven things we should always splurge on for our homes.  It's written by Erika Ward owner at Erika Ward Interiors.

1. Window Coverings
Splurge on custom window treatments, it always dresses up a room.

2. Linens and Towels
Consider anything that touches your bare skin an investment in comfort. Bed linens and towels with a high thread count are softer, durable and long lasting.

3. Upholstery

Purchasing a quality sofa or other piece of upholstered furniture that stands up to the demands of your lifestyle is always a good idea. Cotton blends that have a high percentage of polyester provide optimal stain resistance and long-term wear.

4. Room-Size Rug
It can take months to find the perfect rug, and when you do, it usually isn't cheap. Costs vary depending on the age, weaving technique, fiber content and dye method.

5. Mattress
Good health is one of your biggest assets, and a good night's sleep is essential to your well-being. Experts recommend buying what's comfortable for you; there is no one size that fits all. Take your time when shopping for a mattress and select one that provides optimal support when you're sleeping on your side with hips and knees slightly flexed.

6. Original Artwork
A one-of-a-kind piece by its nature has special value. In addition to adding beauty and interest to the home, fine art gains extrinsic value as time passes.
Seek out emerging artists and purchase pieces you love from them. Their work is likely to cost less than that of established artists, and you are still likely to see your investment grow in value over time.

7. Countertops
Classic black and white honed granite countertops never go out of style.

You should check out Houzz.com. Whenever I'm looking for some design inspiration or help with a remodeling project I look on their website.  You can find anything there, even orange front doors!
This is day 20 of the 31 days of Cheap & Chic series!  Check out the others here on The Nesting Place, who are doing this along with me.

So, which splurge have you done?

My Moody Ways

Yikes, I know, it's been awhile.  I've been really busy with some family stuff and I have also been taking this great class on Decor8 called Blogging Your Way.
This is supposed to be Day 29 of the 31 Days of Cheap & Chic, but I'm only on Day 19!  I'm so behind, but I will keep on doing it.

Our homework assignment for Blogging Your Way was to create a mood board about how we want our blog to look and feel.  This is what I want my blog to be, a place where you can be inspired, find great ideas and simplify your life... beautifully.

Well, what do you think?

Cheap & Chic Day 18, Candles, Candles, Candles,

I can't believe I've made it to Day 18 of the 31 Days Series on Nesting Place.  You should check out her blog, it is full of great decorating ideas and words of wisdom.  If you want to check out the other bloggers who are doing this madness you can look here.

Wow, I thought I was busy before trying to post one or two post a week but posting everyday is a little insane!  I haven't exercised much and I'm felling a little thick around the middle (if you know what I mean).  I've decided that I will wake up tomorrow at 5:30am (which will kill me) and either do my Jillian Michaels' videos or go for a short run.  UGH! I gotta do it or else I will be sitting here next month still complaining about how out of shape I'm in.
Sorry, I had to let that out, thanks for listening.

Anyway, on to candles.  I love entertaining and having friends and family over and the easiest way to make everything look amazing is to put out a bunch of candles... everywhere.  I put them on all my tables outside, all over the living room, piano, dinning room and even my bathrooms.  They can really dress up a room and they are so cheap.  I usually stock up on my candle collection at Ikea or Target  I always make sure I have every size on hand and I only buy white candles so the always match.
Here are some beautiful ideas I found on Pinterest.

I bought these candle holders at CB2 and use them all the time.
Candles in Mason jars, so simple but so pretty.  I'm gonna do this for New Years!

Cheap & Chic Day 17, How to Trim Your Bangs

Doing this post again for all my new friends!

I know... it's hard to resist.  You're getting ready in the morning and your bangs are poking you in the eye, so you grab your scissors and start cutting.  Wait!  I'll show you how easy it is to trim your own bangs so I won't have to fix them later.  Let me know how they turn out.

Talk about Cheap & Chic, Neiman's & Target Partner Up!

Have you heard what's happening December 1st?  Neiman Marcus and Target will be launching their holiday collection of fifty limited edition gift items!  There will be goodies for the home, clothes and accessories from top designers like Diane von Furstenberg, Alice + Olivia, Tory Burch, and Marchesa.  You can check it out here and here.  Better get there early, you remember how crazy it was when they had Missoni design a few pieces.  Everything was gone in a few hours and popping up all over eBay for triple of what it cost.
Who's crazy enough to be first in line?

Let's Have a Party

I love having parties.  It can be anything from having friends over for dinner or just hanging out by the fire pit and having cocktails. When I have my friends over I like to decorate and make the place look festive.  Well now I can I have more color on my table.  I love these new My Drap napkins and placemats I just found in In Style magazine.  Twenty-five bright colored cotton napkins, in three different sizes, come in a perforated roll so you can just tear them off as needed.  They are machine washable and dryer safe up to six washings and are completely biodegradable so you can throw them in your green trash can.  I just bought a roll of 12 placemats for $36, such a great deal.

I can't wait to get the orange napkins and grey placemats I just ordered!

Yes, I am a Music Geek...

I love music, I couldn't live without it.  I am always on the hunt for new songs, artist and stations.  This is why I love my iPhone.  I can listen to almost any radio station in the world with it.  I can discover music from all over, with it.  Here are the apps I use when I drive my hour and a half commute to work or when I am schlepping the kids around town.

KCRW App: Best radio station in the world and it is out of Santa Monica College, and member supported.  I listen to their shows live and when NPR is on I can listen to their internet show KCRW Eclectic 24.  This is where I find all my new artist.

TuneIn: My sis loves this App because she can listen to her favorite radio stations in the UK (she used to live in Ireland and fell in love with an Irish boy who loves music too).  She just told me the stations she listens to, one in London, one in Austria somewhere?  I will check out those stations.  You can listen to stations all over the world with TuneIn.

8tracks: Love this app.  This is where I make my playlist and follow other people who make kick A#$ playlist.  There are all genres of playlist created by music geeks, DJ's, record labels, you name it.  Some of the college kids on here have such amazing playlist.

Pandora:  An oldie but a goodie.  We listen to Pandora at the salon because there aren't any commercials.  The only problem is they play the same songs over and over.  Still good music because they have artist like Grimes, Beach House, you name it,  which you don't hear on regular stations.

Spotify: This one is tough for me.  I keep trying to get it, but I just don't.  I don't want all my friends on Facebook to know that I'm listening to Radiohead or Hall & Oats.  My friend Shirley who owns Blazing Saddles swears by it (she makes all her great playlist on it) and she keeps trying to show me how great it is.  Maybe I'm just a slow learner and I'll catch on sooner or later.

Where do you find your new music?

Cheap & Chic Day 13 A Ziggur-What?

Yeah, that's what I said when Emma told me we had to make a Ziggurat out of a cake.  I have to admit that I am the least crafty person you will meet and I am kind of proud of it.  I use to use the excuse that I was a boy mom so I didn't need to be cute and crafty.  Then I had Emma and thank God she's a tomboy!  I warned her about her mother's lack of crafty skills.  I told her that other kids would go to school with cakes looking like something from Food Network.  She said she didn't care as long as we had fun doing it together.  Love that girl!  Well here's how we spent our Sunday.  We made a big mess, but we had a blast.  By the way, Emma's teacher told the kids to do this project without spending a lot of money on craft supplies.  I was so glad because it is really scary for a non-crafty person like me to walk into a Michael's Craft store! (and holy crap that line is crazy, you crafter's know what I'm talking about)

We made two cakes and I also made some rice crispy treats to use for the stairs but we didn't use them.  Can you believe that was the first time I ever made Rice Krispy Treats?  I also have never made or tried Meatloaf!

Emma frosting the Ziggurat.

Ta- Da! The Ziggurat!

Then we had to clean up the huge mess we made!  I'm glad the hubby was on a business trip!

Later that night my sis and I went to see SBTRKT at Club Nokia.  AMAZING show, the tickets were only $40 and we had seats in VIP! We didn't have to stand with all the twenty year olds in general admission.
Fun weekend but now I am soooo tired!  Can't wait to go to work tomorrow so I can have a break!

A Little Somethin' Somethin' for Your Table!

I love fall!  I love wearing sweaters and boots.  I love seeing the leaves change colors... oh wait, they don't change colors in southern California.  Well, I love going to Trader Joe's to buy fall foliage to decorate the house.  Here are a few clever ideas I found on Houzz my favorite home decor site.   Some of these things you may already have in your yard.  Ok, I gotta go and cut some branches off my fig tree!

Uh, What Day Is It?

I am so behind on 31 Days and I'm sitting typing days 13, 14 and 15 right now on Oct 15!  I'm not gonna give up just yet.  Anyway, my weekend was crammed pack but it was fun.

I saw two concerts with my sis and had so much fun.  We saw The XX on Friday night and it was so worth the $80 ticket.  I usually don't mind splurging on a great concert, it was an amazing show!

I decided to invite some friends over for dinner and pumpkin carving on saturday night.  My cheap and easy dinner that I like to do for a crowd is Tamales from my favorite Mexican bakery.  They cost around $15 a dozen and I make some rice, beans and salsa to go with them.  Cheap but maybe not so chic, but so delicious.

Alex planning out his Angels pumpkin with his iPhone.  Yes, even the teens had fun.

 First the dirty work.

Emma helping with the drawing.

Just put a disposable tablecloth down and wrap up the mess and chuck it in the trash!

Their finished work and they didn't want us parents to help them!

Another one by Emma.

 Now it's S'more time!

A Little Music Please!!!!

We interrupt this blog to bring you this important message.  Had to do it, all this blogging is hard work!  Sorry about having to click over to You Tube to watch it but it's worth it to see how great a dancer Christopher Walken is.  Much better than Gangnam Style!
Enjoy and have a great weekend!

Fabulous Home Accessories Under $50

Found this today on Glitter Guide and loved every piece on here.  Carrie on Dream Green DIY did it, I love her blog.  I have been eyeing the deer head for about a year now and thought it was going to be a trend that I would get sick of, but I still like it.  Might have to get the larger version of it.  Here's where you can find these lovely pieces.
